Can’t help staring at that pic on my blog. Even when I was browsing for different blog themes yesterday, this one caught my attention in a way the others didn’t. It wasn’t because it was the most aesthetically pleasing per se…but something about the photo spoke to me. And now, after having made it my blog theme, I’m trying to understand why it struck a chord with me. Here’s what I’ve come up with:
On my 18th birthday, my mother gave me a sunflower (she had never given me any flowers before). She explained its significance to me. “A sunflower grows towards the sun. I hope that you will be like a sunflower, with your soul always growing towards God’s light.” That gift and those words came back to me when I saw the yellow daisy in this picture.
The daisy in this pic, being the only thing that is coloured, looks ‘animated’. I could almost imagine a video in black and white, with the hands cupping the soil and flower, and the flower suddenly coming ‘alive’ in colour. I’m ‘animann’ – ‘animated ann’. That clicked.
More spiritual imagery, linked to the point I just made. That flower…me. Those hands…God’s. His love animates me…infuses me with life, with hope, and with joy. And now this brightened flower is more noticeable. But although in the pic, it is the flower that draws the eye first, the viewer’s attention is drawn instinctively and naturally to the hands that cup it. In the same way, I hope that I might draw attention to the source of my animation…to the greater Light that I hope my life reflects.
