SSHRC

I got the SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) Doctoral Fellowship! So many things happened on my flight back which I had intended to blog, but suddenly this piece of good news takes precedence. Ha ha… Wanting had emailed me while I was in Mexico that I received an envelope from SSHRC but I hadn’t had time to check my utoronto email, so I missed it. Which was probably just as well (I probably would have been in a constant state of suspense!). When I stepped through the door just now, she got me to open the envelope immediately. Thanks, Ting, for being so excited about this for me! :)
Thank you so much to ALL who have supported me one way or the other in my work, in my life… all that contributed to my successful application. And in particular, I am very grateful to the Kiwi and Kenneth for giving me such ruthless editorial feedback with regards to my Plan of Study back in September 2005. *grin* Ok, not too ruthless lah…honest. (Please allow me to use some of my prize money to treat you to a nice meal…might be in the fall when we’re all back in Toronto again.) And though they don’t read my blog, I also wish to express here my deepest gratitude to Professors Michael Vertin and John Portelli who wrote my references. I’m sure they were exceedingly generous to me. I hope their faith in me will not be disappointed.
It’s 2:30a.m. I’m not all un-packed. I still need to shower, and I have a dental appointment at 10a.m.!

  1. I am so happy for you!! Continue to keep up with what you have been doing, in both your PhD work as well as your personal life. You know that I will always be proud of you, no matter what you do, cos it is not what you achieve, but what you have put in with your heart, mind and soul. Thank God for what He has blessed you with, and remember “Much has been given, much will be expected”.

The Kiwi’s highly delighted, and doing a quiet dance of joy around Ann. You’re very welcome, although I am of the opinion you’re highly drunk on joy. *grin* I know better how much help I *really* provided.

I have since been made aware that I did hurt your feelings quite a bit, with my cutting (pun intended) and brutal editting style. On hindsight, I ought to have tried to be less ______, more ______ (fill in the blanks however you wish). Not to say I would have *succeeded*, you understand.

But that’s all water under the bridge now. Hail to the Sunflower!

To Zibin: Thank you, dear. You are always the first to celebrate my successes…don’t forget, I share this with you! Without your support and encouragement for me pursuing my graduate studies, none of this could have happened. I hope we will always help each other give from what we receive, and not just to each other, but to others in our lives as well. Let’s not be stingy! (P.S. You know I am very proud of YOUR achievements too, though you’re always so modest about them! *beams*)

To the Kiwi: I don’t think I have over-estimated how your strengths at precision have helped peck the proposal into a higher polish. Besides, you stayed up till the wee hours in the morning to do it, and for *that* I am also very grateful.

Nothing was hurt that was not already mended by the time you were made aware. Sunflowers need to learn to take constructive criticism well to blossom more radiantly, no? :)
