Never say never

Life is full of surprises.

If you had asked me 10 years ago if I could imagine myself being married to a Chinese High-educated military engineer and sitting in a car enjoying Hokkien songs, I would have collapsed laughing at you. Puh-leeese…! MOI?! Talk about total culture shock! [Stereotypes can be very misleading as I’ve found out. :P]

And yet today I found myself actually enjoying the 881 soundtrack with Zibin. I still don’t understand the songs without subtitles or reading the lyrics. Yet, the melodies are surprisingly pleasant (v upbeat and sweet despite the often sad or ‘cham’ lyrics) and the quality of singing is actually pretty good.

At times like these, I’m glad I married a Singapore heartland boy who has had such different experiences from me. I never really felt like I belonged here, but with Zibin as my companion and guide, I feel a lot more at ease.

I guess it shows… never say never. And with an open mind, you never know what you might come to enjoy (or who you might marry!) ^^
