A nano dream is a wish my heart makes…

There’s really something to be said for delayed gratfication. As some of my blog readers already know, I’ve been feverishly longing after the iPod Nano for quite a while now. First it was an article in Time magazine that I saw. I was impressed but unmoved. Then I saw the TV ad, and well… I wasn’t quite as unmoved after that. Since then, my tentative interest had blossomed into full-blown gadget-lust (which prompted exhaustive web research) and then a steady but controlled yearning.

But as much as I am a creature of passion, prone to extravagant experiences (as well as expressions) of emotion, I have also developed a strong rational voice to keep caprice at bay. In the case of this bout of acute nano gadgetitis, I had persuaded myself to defer the final decision to buy till after protective accessories are available on the market. Afterall, even if I did end up purchasing a nano, it would make no sense to get it without the proper protection it deserves, right? Besides, even if I did cave in to this rather frivolous desire, I wanted the decision to be made with full recognition of what it is…and not one made in a moment of folly. I had to wait till I’ve cooled down sufficiently.

Then, I had a vivid dream last night. I dreamed that I was in a store…and the protective nano covers are finally in store. But all the nanos were sold out…and so it was for store, after store, after store… I mentioned this dream to Zibin when I spoke with him this morning. And I bemoaned how the vivid dream had stirred up the embers of my nano passion back into flame again. And half-jokingly, I said that I may just buy one before the weekend was out. I suppose that forced his hand.

ZB: “Can’t you wait for Santa?”
Me: “Why? Are you intending to buy one for me?”
ZB: *playing dumb* “I don’t know.”
Me: “Don’t lah. It’s a frivolous thing to get…I’ll buy it myself if I do get it.”
ZB: “Really cannot wait ah?”
Me: “Are you getting one for me?”
ZB: “Just… make sure you inform me before you do anything.”
Me: *alarmed* “Have you gotten one already?! Or were you intending to get me one for Christmas?”
ZB: *pause*
Me: “Hey, seriously leh..if you have already gotten it, must tell me. What if I really suddenly cave and buy one?”
ZB: “reluctantly* Ok, I was intending to get one for you…
Me: “不要啦。 Besides, you haven’t been very approving of my irrational nano-fever… don’t spend good money on it lah.”
ZB: What if I tell you I don’t have to pay a cent for it? Singnet is giving out free nanos if I renew my broadband subscription…
Me: *suddenly hears Handel’s Messiah Chorus in my head* Hallelujah, Hallelujah! Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah!

It still remains to be seen if this will come to pass… but I’m glad I waited at least this long. A free nano? Now that is what I call a sweet dream!

P.S. For the curious, here’s some info on the droolicious singnet offer.

  1. Hi dear,

I have actually been thinking of getting a nano too :) About a month ago.. It was funny reading your blogs, cos I think it was about the same time that I was thinking of it too! :) One of my colleagues lent me his ipod a few weeks ago for a day too :) I actually surfed the Apple website a few times too :) You know something, I’m actually a little glad I wasn’t around with you when we both had this ‘fever’, because you know what, I think we both would have caved in at the same time and got one each!!! :)

  2. Congrats on your newest toy! Looks like John will be getting a new mp3 player sooner than expected huh?

Oh, one more thing. I’m happy to see that you actually typed out the entire first phrase of Handel’s Messiah Chorus with 5 hallelujahs rather than just 2 (which is where most people stop at when they are …erm … hallelujah-ing) Yup, I counted. :P

Erm… one last thing. It’s not very helpful to sleep by midnight if you are going to wake up at 5:48 am. Your SM’s watching.

  3. Wait… there’s something wrong with blogspot. Over at the main page, the time stamp was 8:48 am but over here, when you click “show original post” the time stamp is 5:48am.

Bah. The SM signal is over active. False alarm.
