Not Too Far From Here

Hui Jun’s comment in my previous post prompted me to open my ‘Lyrics’ folder. In the past, whenever there was a song that moved or inspired me, I would find the lyrics (or take it down myself) and save it for when I may need it.

Here is a song I heard in my freshman year when I bought Michael Crawford’s On Eagles Wing album. Back then it moved me to tears because I heard it during a time when I was hurting, but this song reminded me that there were so many other people who were hurting more than I was. The lyrics became a prayer that I tried to live everyday. Enjoy!

Not Too Far From Here

Somebody’s down to their last dime
Somebody’s running out of time
Not too far from here
Somebody’s got nowhere else to go
Somebody needs a little hope
Not too far from here
And I may not know their name
But I’m praying just the same
That you’ll use me, Lord
To wipe away the tears
‘Cause somebody’s crying.. not too far from here

Somebody’s troubled and confused
Somebody’s got nothing left to lose
Not too far from here
Somebody’s forgotten how to trust
And somebody’s dying for love

It may be a stranger’s face
But I’m praying for Your grace
To move in me
And take away the fear
‘Cause somebody’s hurting
Not too far from here

Help me, Lord
Not to turn away from pain
Help me not to rest
While those around me weep
Give me Your strength and compassion
When somebody finds
The road of life too steep

Repeat Refrain

Now I’m letting down my guard
And I’m opening my heart
Help me speak Your love
To every needful ear
Someone is waiting
Not too far from here
Someone is waiting
Not too far from here

  1. I loved that song too, and I still do. Thank you for sharing it with all of us. And yes, I am back, after 1 week of no internet… Will have lots to catch up on your blog :)

  2. Haha… I think this proves I’m a tune-only person. I much prefer another song more than this:

    “I ask for nothing,
    I can get by.
    But I know so many
    Less lucky than I…”

  3. *small smile*

Echoing Kenneth; this proves I’m a tune-only person too. I like this song as much as I Hope You Dance. In fact, I like both songs the same way. :P

  4. God Help The Outcasts Ha ha…another song I love very much for both the lyrics and melody. That was the song that touched me the most in Hunchback. Glad you like it, Kenneth, since I was the one who introduced it to you, right? :P

I don’t love the tune of Not Too Far From Here, which is probably why I haven’t listened to it in years. But this song is one of a less than handful of songs where practically every line touches me.

There are two others that come to mind (both of which I like better than Not Too Far as ‘complete’ songs – ‘measured’ by lyrics, melody, and emotional resonance). Wind Beneath My Wings and For Good.

As for I Hope You Dance…another song which I don’t particularly love ‘completely’, I only remembered it after a long time when someone I knew triggered the lyrics in my memory. :)
