Once You Had Gold

It’s slowly sinking in through the whirl of things I’ve had to busy myself with… I’ll be saying good-bye to Toronto soon. I’m sad, but yet not as sad as I would have been if I had to say good-bye a few years ago. Why? Partly because I feel that it is time to move on to the next phase of my life, and I am finally ready to move on… partly because I am looking forward to finally starting my new life with Zibin… but I think most of all because the seeming finality of farewells no longer grieve me as it did before.

Life is an endless flow of endings and beginnings. But the ebb and flow of life is no longer what defines my existence for I have glimpsed something far deeper and wider which encompasses all change. The most beautiful things in this world are transient and they are all the more beautiful in our memories because they are not eternal. And yet, if we put our trust in something greater than ourselves, we may find that some things live on in ways beyond what we dare hope or dream… :)

Once You Had Gold (Enya)

Once you had gold,
Once you had silver,
Then came the rains
out of the blue.
Ever and always.
Always and ever.
Time gave both darkness and dreams to
you.

Now you can see
Spring becomes autumn,
leaves become gold
falling from view.
Ever and always.
Always and ever.
No-one can promise a dream come true,
Time gave both darkness and dreams to
you.

What is the dark;
shadows around you,
why not take heart
in the new day?
Ever and always.
Always and ever.
No-one can promise a dream for you,
Time gave both darkness and dreams to
you.

  1. Hi dear,

Many people do not know this song by Enya :)

But you know what, I like it a lot too. In fact, for a play in JC, this was the theme song I used :) It was also the ‘front credits’ of my project (which was a play) write-up. It was very ‘artistically’ done, with the lyrics writen there, and we (a team of four girls) scored the highest mark in the whole class for this presentation/report/play. We were writing about comfort women during the Japanese occupation. That was a really memorable time, and one of the best projects (not in terms of marks, but in terms of process), that I really really enjoyed. I am really feeling a little wistful today :)

  2. Hey! I remember you doing that project! Or well, you talking to me about that project you did with… oh I forget your group-mates’ names…the two RV girls right? :P

Yeah I like this song… it seems to suit my mood these days… at least one of my moods. :)
